Every Large Housing Development Should Include a Community Hub Managed by Local Residents

Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing many cities around the world. While thousands of new homes are planned or under construction, many communities are concerned about community-focused development, social connections, access to community facilities. People who move into new developments often struggle to build relationships with their neighbours and become part of the local community.

Recent housing projects across the world are delivering new homes along with some community facilities, parks, and public spaces. This is a positive step, but I believe we can go further. New housing developments should not only provide places for people to live but they should also help create stronger communities from day one. Recent developments include plans for community hubs, libraries, parks, and sports facilities alongside new homes, showing that community-focused development is already becoming part of the conversation.

Solution 

I propose that every large residential development should include a dedicated community hub that is partially managed and programmed by local residents.

The hub could provide:

• Meeting spaces for local groups and clubs

• Youth activities and mentoring programmes

• Fitness and wellness classes

• Community gardens and sustainability projects

• Local business and entrepreneurship workshops

• Cultural and creative events

• Volunteer and social support initiatives

Residents could vote on how a portion of the hub’s annual budget is used, allowing communities to shape activities based on their own needs.

Why This Matters

Many modern developments focus heavily on buildings and infrastructure but not always on creating social connections.

Loneliness, social isolation, and declining community participation are challenges affecting many societies. Strong communities improve mental health, safety, participation, and overall quality of life.

Instead of simply building houses, we should be building communities.
