Four Years of Vertigo and I’m Still Searching for Answers
Four years ago, my world quite literally began to spin.
One moment I was living a normal, busy life. The next, I was gripped by an overwhelming sensation that the room was spinning around me. I had never experienced anything like it before, and it was terrifying.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). I attended physiotherapy, where I underwent repositioning manoeuvres to move the tiny crystals in my inner ear back into place. The treatment helped a little, and for a while I believed the nightmare was over.
Sadly, it wasn’t.
Although the original BPPV was treated, the vertigo never truly left. Instead, it became an unwelcome companion that has followed me for the last four years. It comes without warning. There is no timetable, no pattern I can rely on, and no way of knowing when the next episode will strike.
Living like this changes everything.
Simple things that most people take for granted, going to work, making plans with family and friends, shopping, even leaving the house can become overshadowed by the constant fear that another attack could happen at any moment.
Over the years, I have done everything I know to try to find answers. I attended my GP, hospital appointments, MRI scans, CT scans, consulted ENT specialists, researched countless medical articles and patient forums, changed my diet, taken supplements, and followed every piece of advice that seemed worth trying while also incurring the financial cost.
Despite all of this, I still don’t have an explanation for why the vertigo continues.
More recently, I also started suffering from headaches, leaving me wondering if they are connected. Every new symptom brings fresh questions but very few answers.
The impact on my life has been enormous. Eventually, I had to leave my job because I could no longer cope with the unpredictability of my condition. Losing my health was difficult enough, losing my career as a result made it even harder.
Perhaps the most frustrating part is feeling that, once the obvious causes have been investigated, you’re largely left to cope on your own. You learn to manage the symptoms as best you can, but the underlying question remains unanswered.
Why is this happening?
I know that vertigo itself isn’t a diagnosis, it’s a symptom. So what is causing mine? Is there something that has been overlooked? Is there another condition that hasn’t yet been identified? Or are there many others living with the same unanswered questions?
These are the thoughts that stay with me every day.
I’m not writing this because I’m looking for sympathy. I’m writing because I’m looking for a diagnosis as to why this is happening and hopefully a treatment that will work.
If you have lived with recurring vertigo for months or years, especially after being treated for BPPV, I would love to hear your story.
Did you eventually receive a diagnosis?
Did you discover a treatment or specialist who made a difference?
Have you found ways to cope with the uncertainty?
Perhaps there are more of us than we realise—people whose lives have been turned upside down by a condition that is often invisible to everyone else.
My hope in sharing this story is simple. That it reaches someone who recognises themselves in these words.
Maybe together we can share experiences, point each other towards new avenues of investigation, and remind one another that we are not facing this alone.
If you’ve had a similar journey, I’d be grateful to hear from you. Sometimes the first step towards finding answers is discovering that someone else has been asking the same questions.
Please share this on your own social media channels so that we can reach more people and hopefully help this community who are left to manage on their own in this unpredictable space.
Thank you.
